The Defence Police Federation is sad to confirm the horrendous news that one of our colleagues – PC John Hewitt – has died off duty as a result of contracting the coronavirus.

Eamon Keating, Chairman of The Defence Police Federation, said: “This is devastating news. The thoughts of Ministry of Defence Police officers and the police family across the country are with John’s wife Maria and children, his wider family, friends and close colleagues.”

John was devoted to his wife Maria, his two loving sons Jonathan and Josh, his stepchildren Declan and Niamh. He doted on his grandchildren Orla and Anthony.

John was 53 years of age and joined the MDP in 1990.  He served at Clyde and Garlogie before recently assisting in the setting up of the Roster Management Cell in Essex.

His wife Maria is an ex MDP officer who also served at the Clyde and Garlogie leaving the Force to become a nurse in 2014.

Eamon added: “We are there to look out for our colleagues who will be mourning this terrible news and we will also of course be supporting John’s wife Maria and their children at this time. We ask that their privacy is respected.”
