Road reopens after lockdown at RAF Lakenheath

Security forces at RAF Lakenheath stopped the vehicle at 8.50am yesterday morning as it attempted to pass through gate 8.

A spokesman said: “As a precautionary measure, gate 8 was closed and Ministry of Defence police responded by diverting traffic on the A1065 along the stretch from B1112 to Wangford Road.

“Additionally, base officials have closed gate 1, the main gate for the base.”

The A1065 was closed for more than six hours before it reopened at approximately 3pm .

A spokesman said: “Leadership from the 48th Fighter Wing has reopened all of the base’s gates, and Suffolk Police and Ministry of Defence authorities have reopened the A1065 for normal use, following the detainment of a suspicious vehicle at the commercial gate. UK MOD personnel fully resolved the issue without incident.

“RAF Lakenheath leadership thanks its host nation partners and members of the local community for their quick help and patience, which allowed the incident to be resolved safely and securely.”
