Circular 39/15

Dear Members

I am writing to you with regards to a Police Chiefs’ Council vote later this week regarding the introduction of compulsory severance.

Such a decision would result in the Home Office having support, from the Chief Officers, for the introduction of compulsory redundancy packages.

While the vote of the Police Chiefs’ Council would only apply, at least initially, to Home Office constabularies, we are acutely aware of the possibility of it being introduced for the MDP – either as part of efforts to make savings as part of the upcoming Strategic Defence and Security Review, or subsequently.

The Federation has written to both our Minister, Mark Lancaster MP, and to the Home Office’s Policing Minister, Mike Penning MP, to express our concerns. We are additionally aware that a petition has been launched in opposition to compulsory severance. While we certainly would not seek to discourage members from signing such a petition, we would that members should be mindful of MDP regulations when signing such a petition.

Attached to this circular is a letter which members may wish to send their constituency MPs, highlighting concerns regarding compulsory severance. This correspondence includes a request that MPs raise concerns with the Minister, Mark Lancaster.

Should any member have any queries, please do not hesitate to let us know. Members can confirm the name of their local MP by entering their postcode into www.theyworkforyou.com. Your MP’s email address can then be confirmed via http://www.parliament.uk/mps-lords-and-offices/mps/.

Kind Regards

Eamon Keating
