Obituary - Anthony Tibbles
Retired Officer Tony Tibbles died on 29th October 2008. Tony joined the Air Force Department Constabulary in 1969 taking up duties at RAF Kemble. Following force amalgamation in the 1970's Tony was an active federation member and served on the Western Area Committee for a time.
He was always easily recognised by the rather large 'handlebar' moustache that he had in those days. Later in his service when the American Air Force moved into Kemble Tony was in much demand to be photographed in his uniform with numerous American personnel, as they saw him as the typical image of a British Policeman. It was often said that Tony's picture adorns nearly as many American homes as that of there own President.
Tony had an enthusiastic interest in Steam Engines and was especially interested in those traction engines connected with the old fairgrounds. He was friendly with the late Fred Dibnah.
Tony retired in the rank of Sergeant in 1989 having served his entire police career at RAF Kemble and lived in Cirencester, Gloucestershire.
Tony's funeral took place on Tuesday 11th November 2008 at St Peters Church, Cirencester. At the request of family, donations were made to Cancer Research and Macmillan Nurses.
