London Allowance
There has been a great deal of publicity surrounding the decision by the Police Arbitration Tribunal on London Allowance and London Weighting. The PAT awarded an increase to the London Allowance of £3,327 for officers appointed on or after 1st September 1994 and not in receipt of housing allowance. No increase to the current London Weighting was awarded.
MDP do not receive the London Allowance which is separate to London Weighting. The Police Federation had argued strongly in favour of an increase in both allowances for all London officers but that case was rejected by the Arbiters who accepted the Official Sides proposals.
There are concerns, shared by the Forces which border London, about the increased Met Allowance especially on their ability to attract new recruits and retain existing officers. This is currently being addressed by the Police Negotiating Board.
What about MDP! At the present time officers serving in London do not receive the London Allowance.
However, we do intend to open discussion with Force Management on this difficult issue given the similar difficulties faced by MDP officers in London and surrounding force areas.
