The representative body of the Defence Police Federation is made up of committees of elected representatives supported by appointed administrative positions. It is run by the members, in the interest of the members, of the Ministry of Defence police.
The process starts from the ground up and each station is entitled to have an elected representative, or group of representatives, to deal with the day-to-day issues that arise at station level. These stations are groups into three areas - Northern, Midwest and Southern (see table below) - with an additional body which represents the Senior Supervisory Grades (SSG).
The representatives of the stations come together once a year at the annual meeting of branch representatives, in each area, and from that group the Joint Branch Boards (JBB) are elected. The SSG elect, from their numbers, representatives to form a National Advisory Committee (NAC).
Each JBB and the NAC also has one independent member elected by the entire membership from their group. The chairman and independent member for each JBB and the NAC form the Federation’s National Executive Committee (NEC). The National Chairman and National Vice-Chairman are elected from the NEC.
Each committee has an appointed secretary and, for the NEC, the General Secretary of the Federation; these positions are appointed and not elected. The JBB Secretaries oversee Federation Support Officers who are appointed to assist members in relation to welfare matters.
In addition to these committees, there are other sub-committees which are brought together to deal with specific issues such as pensions or conference arrangements.
