The Role of a Health and Safety Rep
The functions of a safety rep are laid out in the Safety Representative and Safety Committee Regulations 1977. These can be summarized as follows:
- raising awareness on health and safety issues among members
- investigating potential hazards and dangerous occurrences
- making representations to, and receiving information from management.
On many MDP Stations there are named personnel who have been accredited by the Defence Police Federation to act on it's behalf as Safety Representatives. They have been appointed by the Federation in accordance with the Safety Representatives Safety Committee Regulations and their names and appointment have been notified to MDP Management.
We are in the process of updating our list of Safety Representatives and it is likely that some stations will not be represented at the present time. Once we have identified which Stations do not have safety representation we will be seeking volunteers to perform that role. This will entail attendance at a one day course to be run locally.
